The week isn’t quite over yet, but it’s already shaping up to be a busy one for Google Chrome. After finally bringing its browser to Android on Tuesday, Google yesterday announced an update for the original desktop version, promising faster browsing and enhanced security. More specifically, this new Stable release features a revamped omnibox that will now pre-render pages as a user types in a URL or search query, allowing for faster load times. Google has also tweaked its Safe Browsing feature, which will now automatically scan downloaded files for malware, with an especially sharp focus on any “.exe.” or “.msi” files. To determine the safety of a given file, the browser will compare it against a list of publishers and files known to be safe. If it doesn’t show up there, Chrome will then consult Google for more information. If the file proves suspicious, it’ll warn the user and recommend deleting it. Google added that it’s working on an update for its Chrome OS, as well, promising a new image editor and Verizon 3G activation portal, though there’s no word yet on when that might roll out. For more details, see the source link below.

It reportedly suffered a slight delay due to some disagreement with local officials over just how its thousands of miles of wires would be hung, but Google announced today that it’s finally ready to begin the rollout of its Google Fiber network in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Expectedly, that effort will initially focus on the network’s backbone, after which Google will then turn its attention towards connecting homes and businesses in the two cities to the gigabit network (promising speeds 100 times faster than the average high-speed connection). Unfortunately, there’s still no firm word as to when the first customers can expect that to happen.

UK pay TV service Sky has just announced its quarterly results, and despite adding 100,000 subscribers as well as notching its “highest ever first-half adjusted operating profit” it will launch a new internet TV service, available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. Sky describes the new service as being aimed at the 13 million UK households who don’t currently subscribe to pay TV, with access available via “PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, games console or connected TV.” Initially, the service will offer Sky Movies on demand joined by sports and entertainment options later, with access based on either monthly unlimited subscription or “pay-as-you-go” pricing. As far as the company’s basic services, it will continue to develop its existing Sky Go product for standard pay-TV subscribers and zeebox iPad companion app, although this seems to initially be a worth competitor for things like Lovefilm and recent UK entrant Netflix. We have plenty of questions about what it will offer cord-cutters and cord-nevers in the UK when it launches in the first half of this year, we should find out more on the earnings call shortly. Until then, hit the PDF link for more detailed financial breakdowns, or check out the IPTV service press release after the break.

The number of internet-connected Chinese citizens jumped 4 percent in 2012, pushing the country’s total number of users over the 500 million mark. A report issued by the state-owned China Internet Network Information Center (CINIC) reveals that over 37% (513 million people) living in The Middle Kingdom are now traversing the information superhighway. Unsurprisingly, the majority of these internet connections (close to 70%) can be attributed to mobile phones; as we’ve seen over the past few days, this mobile-centric user-base has generated very high demand for certain cellular products. Those scrutinizing the CINIC’s report note that the statistics quoted by the Chinese government could be a wee bit on the high side. The report considers a user “internet connected” if they are over the age of six and have been online in the past half year. Hit the source link for more surfing stats from the Far East.

UK carrier O2 will be rolling out its ambitious free WiFi network this month, just in time to let the throngs of tourists update their Facebook statuses during the 2012 Olympic Games and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee. The plan will cover London’s Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea boroughs, creating Europe’s largest free wireless network, according to O2. The deal, which the company adds will not be footed by the taxpayer, is part of a larger plan announced this time last year. Official information and lots of quotes from important sounding people after the break.

Big Red’s finding its pipes cluttered with all of the young people’s streaming video, audio and cloud services. That’s why it’s busting out the credit card to order a fresh new 100G IPv6 network for Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Seattle. It’ll need Cisco’s CRS-3 Carrier Routing System to help the network scale to areas of highest demand, but since it’s already using CRS-1, it should be a simple matter of swapping out the old kit. FiOS customers will also see network improvements when the upgrade is finished in the first half of next year, just be on the look out for repairmen huddling ’round your nearest junction box.

We love our dogs. Shit we LOVE our dogs a lot, but we have never gone as far as to dress them up for Halloween. However if we did we would want our hounds to be as cute as The Wampug. This little guy is the cutest thing we have ever seen dressed up as a Wampa from Star Wars Empire Strikes Back. Here is a little info via the YouTube page.

“Every year I make a new costume for my pug Chubbs and this year was no exception. This year she became the dreaded Hoth Wampa from The Empire Strikes Back! Here she coming directly from her photoshoot and looking cute as can be! Beware…the WAMPUG!”

Here is “The Wampug“. Enjoy!

Google has a lot of pictures of people. Google also indexes a lot of content written by people. Ponder those two facts for just a moment and you’ll come upon the search giant’s Next Big Thing: highlighting authorship. Now, with a little markup magic, Google can not only track you but track what you wrote online, tying it all together so that search results written by you pop up with a picture of you, linked back to your Google Profile. It’s a great way to highlight who’s up to what online but, if you’re not into it, opting out is as easy as doing nothing. Don’t add that markup and you’re free to keep musing about Muse to your heart’s content without those words ever corrupting future vanity searches. Right now the program is rolling out to a select few in a pilot program, but look for it to embrace more personalities in the coming months.
