Fresh off the publication of its latest tablet report, Strategy Analytics has come out with a new batch of statistics on the global mobile market. In a report published yesterday, the research firm crowned Apple as the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume, on the strength of the 37 million iPhones it shipped during Q4 2011 — good for 23.9 percent of the market. Samsung wasn’t too far behind, though, with 36.5 million smartphones shipped during the quarter, comprising 23.5 percent of the market. Nokia finished in third place, with 19.6 million smartphones and a 12.6 percent market share, though it fared notably better among handset makers on a global (i.e., smartphone and feature phone) level. According to Strategy Analytics, the Finnish manufacturer shipped 417.1 million handsets for the full year, 113.5 million of which were shipped during the fourth quarter of last year. For the year, Nokia accounted for 26.9 percent of the market, followed by Samsung, which shipped 327.4 million units shipped during 2011 and finished with a 23.1 percent market share. As for Apple, it accounted for 8.3 percent of the market in Q4 (its best showing, according to Strategy’s metrics), with 37 million quarterly shipments. You can find more details in the pair of press releases after the break, or at the source link below.

If you’re jonesing to get your photos and movies from your smartphone back to the home computer without futzing around with cables, the folks at SugarSync have a new spoonful of sweetness for Android and iOS devices — and with its free price, it should be easy to swallow. In the latest version, the company has applied its AutoSync technology to videos, which means that all media files can now be synced to the cloud and pushed to linked computers without user intervention. As this could involve a significant amount of data, AutoSync Videos works only over WiFi, and users may select from three compression qualities based on their desire for picture quality or upload speed. The latest SugarSync apps also feature a redesigned photos tab, which lets users view all their pictures — not just the recent ones — and offers quicker navigation along with larger, high-res previews. The company gives all users 5GB of storage absolutely gratis, so if you have a lot of media to unload, it may be worthwhile to hop aboard. You’ll find the complete PR announcements just after the break.

We’re still waiting for Time Warner to bring its live TV streaming to Android, but the platform is enjoying some exclusive support today with two new apps. The first is the My TWC account management app which lets subscribers view their services, pay bills, adjust call forwarding and, soon, tap into their voicemail remotely. The other one is a new version of its TWC TV app, reformatted to work on phones even while the TWCable TV app on iOS is still a tablet only affair. iPhone and Android owners alike shouldn’t have to wait long for their relief however, as the iPhone edition is slated to arrive in January, and ICS-enabled live TV streaming is still on the roadmap for “early next year.” Hit up the corporate blog for the full feature lists and breakdowns, or just head over to the Android Market to install either free app.

No joke, it really will. All you have to do is walk into a retailer this Saturday, whip out your smartphone and use Amazon’s Price Check app to collect price data on in-store items. In exchange, the company will offer you a discount of five percent (or up to $5) on “select items” in electronics, toys, music, and other product divisions, though you’ll only be able to use it a maximum of three times. The campaign represents Amazon’s latest attempt to creep into the brick and mortar sector on the back of barcode scanning technology, and seems like a pretty clever way to bolster its mobile presence, while gathering intel on its competitors’ prices, as well. It all kicks off at 9 PM (PST) on Friday, and will draw to a close just before midnight on Saturday. Hit up the source link for more details.

Samsung’s new Bada flagship has just docked into our illustrative French port. Announced back in the summer, the Wave 3 arrives on the refreshed Bada 2.0 OS, powered by a 1.4GHz processor and packing a four-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display. Storage matches the watery iteration, with 3GB of memory baked-in, with expansion possible through microSD. Meanwhile, an auto-focus five megapixel shooter will do its best to fill all that space. Not content with France (where Bada-powered handsets have established a niche fanbase), the HSPA-connected smartphone is also penned to hit Germany, Russia and Italy before the end of the year.

Wait, this is just now happening? The Pew Project’s 2011 report on mobile devices’ effect on media was published this week; it’s a fascinating read from end to end that reveals a wild swing in the way we’ve gathered news and information as human beings over the past decade, but a couple stats really stand out. First off, the internet has finally overtaken newspapers as a news source, putting it behind just television — and we already know the writing’s on the wall there since the young ones are already preferring the web. And of those web-savvy, voracious consumers of information, some 47 percent are getting at least some of it on the go, either through their phone or tablet (like, say, Engadget’s lovely selection of mobile apps). Mass transit commuters have always been a haven for newspaper-toting businessfolk — but with iPads continuing to sell like hotcakes, not even the subway is safe from the tablet onslaught.

Online news overtakes paper, and nearly half of it is mobile originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Mar 2011 14:49:00 EDT.
Lol how cool is this, iTricorder here we come

Summary:

People have been trying to turn cellphones into medical and atmospheric scanners for some time now, but when it’s NASA stepping up to the plate with a little device to monitor trace amounts of chemicals in the air, it’s hard to not start thinking we might finally have a use for all those tricorder ringtones. Developed by a team of researchers at the Ames Research Center led by Jing Li, the device is a small chip that plugs into the bottom of an iPhone and uses 16 nanosensors to detect the concentration of gasses like ammonia, chlorine, and methane……

A nice feature offered in the new release of Windows 7 working inline with Microsoft Server 2008 is DirectAccess.

But if this seamless connection is happening as soon as you hit the internet without user intervention; does privacy become a topic? *opens a can of worms*

I have to read more into it though I would assume some kind of seperation will be available; first thing that comes into mind is companies using wpad.dat, proxy.pac files. Would using scope options in DHCP via DNS request for proxy auto config be an option to disable or will not be an issue at all?

Pros and Cons for both, have a read and make your own decision.

Greetings All!

Well I just got the email this morning regarding the Dell Latitude 2100 Mobile Computing Station.

The price was a little more than what I expected at around $4,500.00 AUD.

I was thinking more around the High 2′s up to mid 3′s however for your money it has everything integrated such as push image SW updates remotely, power without touching cords and no cord damage over time.

Some media for your below:
