We awoke this morning to a deluge of hype surrounding Tweetbot, the version 1.0 Twitter client from Tapbot. So we sucked down some legal stimulant and ponied up the entrance fee to give it a go on an iPhone 4 (the app requires iOS 4.1 or later). Granted, we’re still in the honeymoon period but we’re definitely impressed. The design elements, animations, and audio tones are slickly implemented and the functionality is rich and intuitive. We’re especially smitten by the right and left swiping actions used to reveal conversations and replies, respectively, and the customizable tab bar that gives quick access to lists and retweets. In fact, the list integration is so good as to finally make Twitter lists useful on a smartphone. We also applaud Tapbot’s plucky release in light of Twitter Inc.’s preference that developers stop reproducing the Twitter client experience, especially since the result is superior to Twitter’s own free iOS app. Sure, the user interface can be a bit overzealous at times (think HTC Sense vs. Windows Phone 7) but it’s more fun than it is distracting, especially during these early hours. At $1.99 it’s definitely worth a look — just promise to view the video overview after the break first, ok?

Paul Thurrott has been a trusted insider on all things Microsoft for as long as we can remember. As such, it’s worth paying attention to a recent article he published on Windows IT Pro that calls for Microsoft’s first “NoDo” Windows Phone 7 feature update to hit as early as this week. Of course, Steve Ballmer said it was coming in “early March” so that’s not much of a prediction. What really caught our attention are Paul’s comments about “Mango” — the big WP7 feature update that Microsoft says will bring multitasking, IE9, and Twitter integration to Windows Phone handsets later in 2011. According to Thurott’s sources, Mango won’t be finalized until the end of the year making a release to consumers in 2011 a “near impossibility.” Ouch. How this might affect Nokia’s Windows Phone 2011 launch <strike>plans</strike> hopes — rumored to be waiting for Mango — remains to be seen.

Update: Mary Jo Foley, who’s got a few Microsofties in her own back pocket, says that she’s hearing that Microsoft recently promised OEMs and carriers Mango by “early fall at the latest” — just in time for a holiday consumer launch. It’s real life he-said she-said rumor flagellation folks!

The BMW Connected app has been available for a few months now, following in the footsteps of Mini Connected as it sits there, and taunting you from the App Store. We knew cars supporting the feature would be coming in March, and now we know which ones will be first: BMW’s svelte little 1 Series. To enable the streaming radio and even streaming video (when the car is stationary) on the dash-mounted display you’ll need to tick the box next to a €150 (about $205) option. In your suitably equipped car you can then get your Facebook and Twitter feeds read to you and even provide automated responses using “vehicle information such as current speed, outside temperature or navigation destination.” We’re hoping the car can apply some flowery language to such hard data, like “bat out of hell” for those particularly warm days in which you’re driving at a high rate of speed from an unpleasant point of origin.

That includes Twidroyd and UberTwitter — the latter being renamed UberSocial, but one of a few changes that the company made to ensure that it wasn’t violating Twitter’s usage policies. If only everything could be resolved this quickly, right?
