Oh spring, flowers blooming, bees buzzing, the smell of new e-readers in the air. According to The New York Times, the folks over at Barnes & Noble’s digital team are putting the finishing touches on a “fifth e-reading device,” to be released during the aforementioned season. Not a lot of details on that at the moment — the bookseller’s not spilling the beans. Given last year’s release schedule, timing-wise the device would fall closer in line with the company’s e-ink line of products, so perhaps the non-tablet Nook line still has a bit of fight left in it, after all.

Codemonkeys exhibiting the kindness of strangers? Why, yes, this is such a tale. When XDA Developers member verygreen came across the pleas of one user obsessed with attaching an external USB keyboard to an eReader, he did what any decent hacker would and created a workable solution. Using a loaned Nook Simple Touch, this self-styled Make-A-<strike>Wish</strike> Hack was able to patch Barnes & Noble’s existing kernel, which already supported USB host mode, and send commands over ADB to enable the connection. It’s not a foolproof workaround, though, as only low-power devices will function without additional juice and even so, at a great cost to the greyscale device’s battery life. Sure, this may not excite you much, but it’s certainly made for one very satisfied forum dweller out there in cyberland. After all, isn’t that what haxxors are for?

Got some Kindle hardware burning a hole in your pile of festive gifts? Well, British bookworms have been given some extra yuletide joy courtesy of Amazon UK which has also started a 12-day sale, focusing on its e-book wares. The site vows to add more digital reads each day and it looks like all the additions will stick with their shrunken price tags for the extent of the sale. Head to the source below for some one-click literary gratification.

Amazon’s latest attempt to lock down root access on its Kindle Fire has been, well, routed. It took the tinkerers mere days to catch up and the new root file is now up for grabs, courtesy of Android Police and a few good devs. The method is app-based and looks to be disarmingly simple, but the usual warnings apply; mess up those software internals and bam, you’ve voided your warranty. Those still willing to dabble can find the full details at the source link below.

Amazon’s Kindle is, broadly, the million-selling gold-standard that all other e-readers aspire to. This year’s edition was slashed back to basics, with the hardware keyboard, touchscreen, expandable memory, 3G access and MP3 support sacrificed in favor of a $79 (with ads) price tag. Now you’ve had three months to get to grips with the changes, do you feel it was worth it? Do you miss the keyboard, are the adverts too intrusive, is it the right size for comfortable use?
Barnes & Noble is celebrating Black Friday with a white border. The bookstore chain is offering up a limited edition of its excellent Nook Simple Touch reader this Friday, November 25th. Slight aesthetic differences aside, the real news here is the price — the company is knocking $20 off the already low-cost device, making it the same as Amazon’s ad-supported, touchscreen-free fourth gen Kindle. The $79 deal will only last one day, so get ‘em while the e-ink is hot. Press info after the jump.

Today it ratchets up the specificity with sometimes contradictory claims that Quanta Computer will be responsible for assembling the tablet with a supposed TI (not NVIDIA) processor and Wintek (not EIH) touch panel among its components. According to DigiTimes, Amazon hopes to move some four million units in 2011 alone with plans to launch the new tablet as soon as August. Possible? Sure, likely even. But we’ll wait for Bezos to sing before updating our holiday shopping lists.

Wondering which electronic reader reigns supreme when it comes to extreme battery life? If you ask Amazon, it’s the Kindle, but Barnes & Noble begs to differ — and it has some numbers to back that up. Earlier today we received a statement from the company explaining just how thrifty the new Nook is when it comes to sipping from cells. With WiFi disabled on both devices, B&N says it managed 150 hours on the new Nook when turning a page every minute. The current-gen Kindle, meanwhile, petered out after 56. That’s almost three times as long and maybe, just maybe, enough to finally get you through Anna Karenina on one charge — or at least through the Cliffs Notes version. More details on the testing overview below, which we promise can be rather more rapidly ingested.

Amazon too, apparently. The company just issued a press release to announce that digital book sales have now exceeded sales of all print titles, both hardcover and paperback combined. As of April 1st, for every 100 print books that Amazon has sold (of any kind) the company moved 105 Kindle books, and no that doesn’t include downloads of free titles. Also of note: the ad-supported reader that’s shipping for $114 is now selling more quickly than the normal, $139 version. Proof, then, that people will put up with more ads in more places for 25 bucks.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos didn’t confirm a Samsung-built tablet today, but he’s not saying no — in fact, the tell-it-like-it-is founder of the massive e-tailer suggested quite the opposite in an interview with Consumer Reports. “Stay tuned” was the answer, and then Bezos told the publication that if such a device were on the way, it would be complementary to Amazon’s existing Kindle, as Bezos doesn’t want to disturb the market for that “dedicated reading device.” If we were to read between the lines — which is often a bad idea — we’d say that could pave the way for an Amazon tablet to launch without a sunlight-readable screen, but it could just be that a tablet would be pricier, while the Kindle could remain relatively cheap. Speaking of E Ink, the CEO said that a color version “is not ready for prime time.” As of January, we’d agree.
