Your next tablet is going to rock a quad-core chip, so why not stuff that same silicon into your next phone too? Per PocketNow, that’s apparently what LG has up its sleeve with the forthcoming X3. Evidently, the four-core Tegra 3 device will also tote a 1280 x 720 4.7-inch display, 16GB of storage, Ice Cream Sandwich and NFC all in a svelte 9mm package. The whispers didn’t stop there, of course, indicating it’ll also wield 21Mbps HSPA support coupled with 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. So will the X3 be the world’s first quad-core phone, much in the vein of LG’s G2X that preceded it? Or will it be beaten to the punch by HTC and Samsung? Here’s to hoping we’ll find out at MWC.

Hot on the heels of the Xperia Ion launch chez AT&T this morning, it would seem Sony may have yet another trick up its sleeve in the form of the Xperia S. While nothing is official until Sony tells us so, it would seem this device packs a 1280 x 720 4.3-inch display, MSM8260 dual-core thrumming away at 1.5Gz, and a 12 megapixel shooter that’ll capture at 1080p. Sadly the word is that it’ll launch in the second quarter running Android 2.3 and not our beloved Ice Cream Sandwich. Design-wise, the Xperia S looks to be stunning with a gentle curve in the back and a small translucent lit — notification with this would look brilliant — bar toward the bottom. Here’s hoping this is the real deal, and if so we’ll be back in a few hours with a load of vids and pics of it in action.

The grain of salt we’re taking this with is roughly boulder-sized but, we have an image of what may very well be the AT&T Nokia Ace — the rumored LTE-sporting Windows Phone from the Finnish phone maker. It seems that someone sent out a holiday greeting featuring a phone that looks a heck of a lot like the Lumia 800, except it prominently features a Ma-Bell logo, a 4G icon and what appears to be a front facing camera. Of course, what has also been referred to as the Lumia 900 could just as easily be a chop job — and not a particularly difficult one to pull off at that. Hit up the source link for a couple of more pics of what could be Nokia’s first high-end Mango (or, perhaps Tango) offering here in the US.

Are there two Droid tablets on Verizon’s horizon? It certainly seems like it, now that CNET has outed the Motorola Mobility Droid Xyboard. According to the news outlet, Verizon is gearing up to release two different versions of the 4G LTE-equipped tablet — an eight-inch model and a ten-incher, both slated for launch later this month. Motorola declined to provide details on the devices, and Verizon stopped short of spilling the beans on pricing and availability, though it did provide the following statement: “As we’ve previously mentioned, we’re planning to bring several new LTE devices to market including two tablets. We haven’t made any official announcements in the U.S. but we look forward to sharing more details soon.”

CNET, meanwhile, apparently managed to get its hands on the two slates (pictured above), reporting that both carry a 1.2GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM and a five-megapixel camera, along with a 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter. They’re also coated in Corning Gorilla Glass and CNET, in the absence of quantitative specs, reports that both are “thinner than a AAA battery and lighter than a paperback book.” The stylus-equipped ten-inch version is reportedly geared toward the enterprise market, whereas its little brother is described as more media-friendly, presumably with the consumer market in mind. That’s about all we know at this point, though be sure to check out CNET‘s coverage below for more images and insight.

We already knew to expect a 7-incher today, and that’s exactly what we got in the Kindle Fire. We just asked Amazon Kindle vice president (and thinking man) Russ Grandinetti when we might expect a larger successor. With a smile, Russ said “Stay tuned,” and left it at that. If you’ll recall, RIM’s Ryan Biden told us at a past Engadget Show that there was “no reason” the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook couldn’t be shipped in a different size, and given recent rumors that both outfits were working with Quanta, it’s not too tough to read betwixt the lines. We also asked about an international release of the Fire, knowing that many of you are lamenting its US-only release in November. We got the same response there. So, it’s coming… the only question is when.

Today it ratchets up the specificity with sometimes contradictory claims that Quanta Computer will be responsible for assembling the tablet with a supposed TI (not NVIDIA) processor and Wintek (not EIH) touch panel among its components. According to DigiTimes, Amazon hopes to move some four million units in 2011 alone with plans to launch the new tablet as soon as August. Possible? Sure, likely even. But we’ll wait for Bezos to sing before updating our holiday shopping lists.

Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is starting to build a bit of a reputation for accurate Apple rumors, so you may be able to take this with a slightly smaller dose of NaCl: Kuo told AppleInsider that Cupertino’s allegedly ordered 380,000 of those new MacBook Air models with Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors on board, to be completed within the month. Of course, if Apple’s got its heart set on distributing silica scaffolding, it has to phase the existing Core 2 Duo variants out, and so the company’s reportedly finishing a final production run of 80,000 units now. If you happen to notice that your entire state is out of aluminum-clad ultralights, you know who to call!

Update: iPhone hacker Chronic <strike>claims the MacBook Air refresh could appear as soon as Wednesday morning.</strike>

Update 2: Never mind — Chronic says his sources were mistaken about the MacBook Air on Wednesday.

Everyone ’round here knows that Samsung has a lusty 10.1- and premature 7-inch version of its Galaxy Tab tablet. But we’ve heard nary a peep from Samsung about that $469 8.9-incher announced alongside its bigger, just-as-thin sibling back in March. We might know why. According to Korean news site Etnews, Samsung is having trouble getting it to market due to low yields of the 8.9′s G1F touch-panel which uses one less film layer than conventional GFF (glass fiber filter) panels. This G1F architecture is behind Samsung’s Super Clear LCD which you’ll find on Sammy’s own Galaxy Player, (Russian) Nexus S, and Wave II handsets. Etnews claims that Samsung will offset the G1F shortfall with GFF-type touch panels that are 30 – 40 percent thicker and dimmer, thanks to the extra layer. If true then we have one question: which regions will get the chunkier Galaxy Tab 8.9 when if finally does launch this summer?

We earlier had a tip from OfficeMax stating July 17th and, while this morning’s info pointed to a June 22nd release, Amazon seems pretty confident that the former date is correct. Go to Amazon.com, search for “hp touchpad” and enjoy the little advertisement that appears saying “HP will release the sleek and sophisticated webOS-empowered TouchPad on July 17, 2011.” That’s about as concrete as you can get, meaning you have just over a month to save up.

[Thanks, Michael]

We said that MobileNotifier unobtrusive notifications might be the single best reason to jailbreak your iOS device, and it sounds like Apple may agree — Redmond Pie reports that lead developer Peter Hajas has been spirited away by the Cupertino computer company to work on iOS itself. Hajas wrote that he was taking a break from MobileNotifier, and some newfangled detective work dug up the rest — a thinly-veiled reference to Steve Jobs, a tweet mentioning a California “fruit” company, and finally an alleged screenshot of Hajas’ entry in Apple’s employee database. We’re feeling slightly bittersweet about the whole thing, to tell the truth, as while we’d rather not have to smash our iPhone chains, the notion that this is all happening now suggests we won’t see greatly improved notifications in iOS 5, come Monday.

[Thanks, Jeff]
