A court in the Hague has just cleared the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for sale in the Netherlands, rejecting Apple’s requests for a nationwide ban. As NU.nl reports, a different Dutch court had already issued a similar ruling in October, which Cupertino promptly appealed, claiming that Sammy’s slate was too similar to its own iPad 2. Today, though, the Court of the Hague shot down Apple’s arguments, determining that there are enough differences between the two products to legally justify their coexistence. Granted, this is only one of many patent battles that the two companies are currently waging, but for today, at least, it looks like Samsung has come out on top.

[Thanks, Rolfski]

If you’re not quite ready to take up ASUS on its refund offer (or if you simply don’t live in the UK), you’re probably holding out for additional updates to dry your tears. Fortunately, Asus hasn’t forgotten about you and your ilk. Early this morning, the Transformer Prime quietly received an OTA update that not only unroots the tablet, but also kicks the slab’s GPS version up to 6.9.13. The folks on the XDA developers forums have restored their roots easily enough, and seem to be reaping the benefits of updated GPS drivers, as well. Engadget’s own tests lean on the positive side — lounging indoors, in a spot where GPS reception was previously all-dark, we snagged sight of 12 satellites on a freshly rebooted Prime with WiFi disabled. Although the response seems generally positive on the XDA developers forums, not everybody is seeing our success. Either way, this update certainly didn’t make things worse; a step in the right direction to be sure.

First, an apology: Microsoft released details of Windows 8′s tablet hardware requirements back in December, but we were too preoccupied with Christmas and CES to notice. Now that the only thing we’re suffering from is jet-lag, let’s take a quick tour of some notable extracts from the documentation and what it’ll mean for users when the operating system arrives towards the back end of the year.

We had mixed feelings about Notion Ink’s Adam slate when it debuted last year, but if you’re one of the converts who took one home, then it looks like your faith is being rewarded with an ICS update. Okay, it’s only an alpha build, so not everything is working just yet — that’d be the camera, 3G, USB storage and flash drive, oh and the light sensor. If these *cough* minor niggles don’t phase you, the “upgrade” — shown in the video after the break — is yours for the taking. This isn’t all that Notion Ink’s been up to though, as it’s also quietly teased a new device on its blog which it claims has been built almost entirely in-house this time round. Details are beyond sparse at this time, but with so much ICS tabletry on the cards for 2012, Adam’s new partner will definitely need to have been eating from the tree of knowledge.

If you’re looking to control more than you’re washer and dryer with your mobile device, Samsung can oblige with a update to its NaviBot line. The latest smart vacuum model, NaviBot-S, can be summoned via the same app that is used with some of the company’s other WiFi-enabled appliances, or the more traditional stock remote control. Featuring Visionary Mapping Plus, it uses a ceiling cam to seek out and remember the best route to and from its charging station. The robovac also uses a dust sensor to determine just how dirty your floors are and the exact location of those dropped Cheerios. Should the tech develop a mind of its own, there are some controls on the top panel that will allow you to get things under control right on the device. Now you can prep for those annoying ‘drop by’ guests while you’re on the drive home from the market — with 90% efficiency. As far as cleaning time goes, you can expect around 100 minutes of work per three hour charge. For a demo of the NaviBot gathering up spillage, hop on past the break and peep the video.

Intel told us to expect next-gen netbooks from a throng of manufacturers, but for some reason it forgot to mention little ol’ Gigabyte. Perhaps that’s why the Taiwanese manufacturer is being slightly standoffish when it comes to detailing its two new 10-inch slates, which both run on unspecified variants of Cedar Trail and have equally unknown launch dates and prices. What we do know is that the T1006M is a convertible tablet that sports 1366 x 768 densely packed pixels, a USB 3.0 port and what appears to be an optional 3.5G modem — specs that are already familiar from our recent encounter at the FCC. Next comes the S1081, which is a straightforward Windows 7 business slate like its $680 predecessor and comes with a choice of HDD or SSD storage, an optical trackpad for extra “precision,” USB 3.0, VGA and HDMI outputs, plus the same optional multimedia dock. Rest assured that we’ll track these newcomers down on the CES floor to fill in the blanks and judge how well they stand out, now that the quiet trail has become a highway. Until then, feel free to read on for the press release — which also reveals that the Booktop T1132, Booktop M2432 and P2532 gaming notebook are all heading to the US market.

We’ve had a pretty good inkling that the Pantech Element LTE tablet would make an appearance at CES in the coming days, and our confidence level just rose another notch. It appears that one corporate-owned AT&T store got the official marketing material for the new tablet a few days prior to the device’s launch and was a little too eager to put it on display ahead of time. The tipster also spilled the beans on a few specs, lending credence to earlier rumors: it’s a waterproof 8-inch tablet with a 1.5GHz CPU, 16GB of internal storage and LTE, and will go for $300 on a two-year commitment ($450 without). As for availability, we were informed that we should expect it to be available on direct fulfillment (special order) the week of January 15th, with actual units hitting store shelves in the coming weeks. We’ll hopefully get the full laundry list and hands-on time on Monday. Jetstream, anyone?

We wouldn’t be entirely shocked to see a handful of 3D tablets pop up at CES next week. In the meantime, however, Brando’s got a pretty good hold on the market, with the clunkily-named GADMEI T863-3D Tablet. The Gingerbread slate offers up 3D images and video on its eight-inch display, without the need for glasses. You’ll also get HDMI out, a microSD slot and a front-facing camera on the thing. With 512MB of RAM on-board, this $199 tablet won’t be the quickest one around, but at least you’ll be able to brag about being the first person on your block with a 3D slate, for whatever that’s worth. Video of the tablet in action after the break.

Nicholas Negroponte apparently either found the unbreakable screens he was looking for or simply decided the crowds at CES 2012 should get to see the new slate first. It’s powered by a Marvell ARM PXA618 SoC that runs Android or Linux and has the same Pixel Qi display seen in other OLPCs. Plus, it has special charging circuitry so it can top up its battery using solar cells and hand cranks like its XO 1.75 sibling — a particularly useful feature in places where electrical sockets are hard to come by. Unfortunately, pictures of the tablet are still scarce, but come on back next week when we get our hands on one at CES. Until then, check out the PR after the break.

Scientology. Oprah. Katie. Love. Weird. Dell. Maverick. Mission: Impossible. Streak 5. Ghost Protocol. Scientology (again). Weirdly enough, the smattering of things that seemingly don’t fit in that lineup have a place together, as what appears to be a Streak 5 has appeared in the “Sandstorm Chase” scene of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Word on the street is that Tom needed 4.32 million of these things to ensure he had enough for a nearly unlimited amount of re-takes. And now, the whole ‘discontinued‘ thing makes total sense. Vid’s after the break, with the four of you who aren’t fans advised to head straight to 1:40.
